About

As Anahid Kassabian pointed out, listening is a "refined and specialized form of touch," in which we direct our attention to what we hear, gather meaning, interpret it, and decide on an appropriate response. This is especially important when it comes to music, which demands resonance, empathy, and space to be fully experienced. This distinction comes to mind when thinking about Pauline Oliveros concept of “deep listening”, where to hear is a physical ability that allows us to perceive sound, but to listen is to give attention and meaning to what is perceived. Deep listening requires us to fully engage with the sounds around us, to immerse ourselves in the experience and to be open to new perspectives and insights.
